Wikipedia, free Internet-based encyclopaedia, started in 2001, that operates under an open-source management style. It is overseen by the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation.

Wikipedia was launched on January 15, 2001 as a single English-language edition at www.wikipedia.com, and was announced by Sanger on the Nupedia mailing list.

There are two co-founders of Wikipedia: Larry Sanger (born 1968), American internet project developer. Jimmy Wales (born 1966), American-British internet entrepreneur.

A wiki is a web-based collaborative platform that enables users to store, create and modify content in an organized manner. The term comes from the word wiki wiki, which means fast in Hawaiian.
